Traditionally, the transportation and logistics industry has been a laggard in adoption of technology, so there’s a lot of work to be done in every organization to connect those data sources to gain insights to come up with a data strategy; it can be overwhelming. Thinking in the mindset of a product and platform to get to where you want to go in 1, 2, 3 years versus tomorrow is really critical to building out your software infrastructure. It’s a very low margin business compared to some other businesses and the IT Investments have typically been tied to compliance, government standards and doing the minimum hardware rollout to get the data that’s required to stay in compliance with the government standards.
What we’re seeing now is there’s enough data to really gain more business knowledge to automate workflows to save real miles per gallon and real minutes and hours in the day of an operator. Ultimately, what it’s going to mean is you’re going to be able to move faster than your competition, you’re going to be able to adopt new technologies if you’ve built your software in a way that can adapt to new technologies that come out. You can ingest new data sources and you’ll be the first to gain those insights over your competitors. That means you’re going to be saving those dollars more quickly, you’re going to be gaining the margin and your operation’s going to run smoother and you’re going to have better customer service.
