App Modernization Helps Natural Gas Transportation Company Stay Compliant and Increase Revenue

challenge

Regulatory Change Requires Modernization

For our client, a natural gas transportation company, a number of their industry peers had already moved to the Cloud, but our client’s data centers were all on-prem and the technology was out of date. There was a big regulatory change coming that they needed to support and their current system was unable to do so. If they weren’t in compliance, their operations could shut down and the business taken by competitors. Our client knew that we were the team to make it happen, as we had successfully modernized this platform for them 10 years prior. They also wanted a partner who could not only help them with Cloud migration and adaptation, but to instill a true DevOps culture within their organization.

A Multi-Faceted Approach

To help our client adopt Agile and Scrum frameworks, we embedded a Scrum-as-a-Service® team to lead them in this journey and help reinforce how to iteratively develop digital products. We modernized their existing application from a legacy tech stack to a web-based Blazor front-end in order to ensure cloud readiness. Our team also improved the application’s usability and user interface (UI). During these modernization efforts, we discovered that queries to datasets were taking longer than they should, so we did some database tuning and added data indexes, which allowed the queries to run more quickly. This improved our client’s reporting capabilities, enabling them to access additional data points that they previously would’ve had to find manually.

Driving Lasting Value

Over our 12+ year partnership with this client, we’ve become trusted consultants and critical members of their team. Our ability to shape an engagement through our deep understanding of our client’s regulatory requirements, while also informing features and functionality to drive value were critical to its success. The modernization effort has enabled our client to apply industry standard calculated rate increases multiple times over the years, thereby increasing their revenue. Our database tuning resulted in a 30-40% reduction in runtime, giving our client quicker access to information, enabling them to make informed decisions more efficiently.
